Industry Night Site
Project Overview
The Industry Night website was built to promote the Interactive Media Design program while helping students connect with potential employers and industry experts. Our goal was to create a polished, professional, and accessible site that showcased student work and made it easy for attendees to explore event details.
Technologies Used
- Trello
- GitHub
- HTML
- CSS
- JavaScript
Roles
- Project Management
- Front-End Developer
My Role
- Served as both Project Manager and Front-End Developer in a four-person team.
- Divided responsibilities across roles: Motion Designer, UI/UX Designer, Project Manager, and Front-End Developer.
- Oversaw team coordination, task assignment, and scheduling through Trello, while managing communication and documentation through shared Google Docs.
- Collaborated on with team mates for front-end coding, layout development, and interactive JavaScript features.
- Strengthened project management, problem-solving, and logical thinking skills through detailed planning, debugging, and structured team coordination.
Challenges Faced
- The main challenge was creating a balanced timeline that allowed enough time for branding, wireframing, and development without one phase affecting the others.
- Managing both creative design work and coding required careful time allocation to maintain quality in both areas.
- I intentionally built in buffer time to handle unexpected issues, knowing that not everything would go according to plan.
- Translating design ideas into a fully responsive website required problem-solving and adjustments throughout development.
- Overall, the challenge was about time management, flexibility, and maintaining consistency across all stages of the project.
My Process
- Began by reviewing project briefs from all related courses and compiling a comprehensive project plan.
- Used a shared Google Docs file to track team progress, plan milestones, and have each member log their hours for transparency.
- Managed the team through a Trello board, organizing tasks into milestones and objectives to keep everyone aligned and on schedule.
- As Project Manager, handled communication via WhatsApp, maintained documentation, and monitored task completion.
- As Front-End Developer, coded the site using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in Visual Studio Code, managing version control with GitHub.
- Designed and implemented custom tracking buttons to enhance navigation, using GSAP animations and logical debugging strategies to achieve smooth functionality.
- Ensured the final site was mobile-first, valid, responsive, and accessible, with semantic HTML and consistent visual hierarchy.
- Managed the entire process independently without external feedback, maintaining consistent progress reviews and self-assessment.
The Outcome
- Delivered a valid, mobile-first, responsive, and accessible website within four weeks.
- Our project was selected as the winning Industry Night site by the program’s professors and dean.
- Learned the importance of detailed planning, time tracking, and adapting to unplanned challenges.
- Improved debugging and JavaScript problem-solving skills by breaking complex functions into smaller logical parts.
- If revisited, I would allocate more time to the coding and testing phases to refine animations and interactivity further.
